Can Christians be Gay?

(This was actually a response I made, but like some of my comments do, it turned into the size of a blog post, and while it is not my usual style…)

Well, the difficulty here is that the bible clearly lays out homosexual acts as sin (Leviticus 20:13; Romans 1:26 & 27, etc.). Today’s world would call that unjust, because most believe that homosexuality is something that people are born with. I.e: ‘Didn’t God make people gay?’

As a Christian, I do not doubt that people can be born with a stint toward homosexuality. But does that mean that GOD made them gay? The bible teaches that when sin was introduced to the world it corrupted all of humanity, it caused sickness and death to enter into the human race:

‘Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.’ (Rom 5:12)

I believe that since our race has fallen into sin we are born with a sinful nature – this is not God’s fault, nor did He MAKE us that way, it is because sin has corrupted the whole human race. I.e. we are born with a leaning toward committing sins. For example, some people struggle with lying though not everyone has that same temptation. Some struggle with stealing, but others can go their whole lives without wrongfully taking anything.

I believe that someone can be born with a corrupted sense of justice, or of kindness – indeed, how easy it is for us, as humans to want the best for ourselves, and be little concerned with the needs of others (pride)!

I also believe that people can be born with certain sexual orientations. The problem with this that our sexuality is so personal to us that we identify with it – we find a sense of identity in our sexuality, therefore we find a sense of identity in our sexual orientation, as though that in some way defines us. But the fact is, a person is more than their sexuality. To reduce our identity, our person-hood, and our very self-worth to our sexuality is a great injustice which we do to ourselves.

Jesus Christ came into the world to deliver humanity from sin. The whole human race is corrupted by sin – EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US. Because of this corruption of sin, the whole human race is destined to be cast into hell. God is perfectly holy, and no sin, or corruption can exist in His presence. If we repent of our sins (that is ‘turn away’ from them), and believe in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, we can be saved from eternal banishment from God’s presence.

The bible defines homosexual acts as sin. Can a person with homosexual tendencies, therefore, be a Christian? Absolutely – but in order to be saved they must repent, that is: turn away from ALL of their sins. Homosexuality is no worse a sin than any other sin listed in the bible, but when people are unwilling to repent of their sins (including homosexuality), they are not going to be saved from hell with perishing humanity because God commands all men to repent (Acts 17:30).

1 Corinthians 6:9 says:
Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.

No doubt this is offensive to some, but I believe it to be the very Truth of God, and I love you enough to give the warning at the risk of being labelled an ‘homophobe.’  I mourn for those who claim that homosexuality is at no odds with faith in Christ, because it is a self-deception that will lead many to the fires of hell (and I would rather you go to heaven).

As for those who are gay ‘Christian ministers’?  Jesus declared these words:

21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.  (Matt 7:21-23)

In light of what I know of the scriptures, I would have to join Christ, and the apostles, and John the Baptist, and make this declaration:

Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand!

    • I don’t know your experience with regard to that thought, but adultery is just as much sin as any other sin. The first principal doctrine of Christianity is repentance from dead works (Heb 6:1).

Proverbs 28:13 ‘He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth, and forsaketh them shall have mercy.’

If someone commits adultery, and repents, they are just as much eligible for forgiveness as a fornicator, or thief.

‘Seek ye the Lord while He may be found, call ye upon Him while He is near: let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrihteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and He will have mercy upon him: and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.’ (Isaiah 55:6&7)

That is the entire point of Jesus death on the cross. All of our sins, and guilt were put upon the only man who never sinned at all so that we can be justified before God. But only if we agree with God about the wickedness of sin, and turn away from it shall we be forgiven.

I hope that gives better clarity. The bible says all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, homosexuals are not being singled out, nor are they unredeemable. But they must acknowledge and repent of their sins.

    • I’ve never met any Christians that have thought adultery wasn’t a sin. (Even the ones I’ve known who’ve committed it have known it was not God’s design or best for human flourishing and they reaped the consequences of it.
